You’ve heard my reasons why you should consider giving charities appreciated stocks or mutual funds over cash. If your tax situation has changed you may want to consider a Donor Advised Fund to get your tax deduction back.
Holiday feelings are among us and people are making the effort to give to those less fortunate. While cash is accepted by every charity, it may be in your best interest to gift appreciated stocks or mutual funds; this way you get a double tax benefit. you may be able to deduct the value you donated plus wipe out the future capital gain tax. The 2017 tax cut has drastically changed the way taxes work. Most people in America will no longer itemize their deductions, which has charities frightened that people will stop donating. This could be a very real problem should anybody reconsider charitable gifts if they don’t think they’ll get a tax deduction.
