A year ago people were predicting the worst for 2019, only for the markets to end up positive. Don’t react too much too headlines or it can ruin your portfolio.
This time last year all the headlines wanted to talk about were a 2019 recession, inverted yield curves and negative interest rates –only to end up 28.74%. By the time these topics make the news it’s usually too late. If you’re reacting to news headlines, it’s probably time to get help with your portfolio. Other topics include:

You’ve heard my reasons why you should consider giving charities appreciated stocks or mutual funds over cash. If your tax situation has changed you may want to consider a Donor Advised Fund to get your tax deduction back.
Holiday feelings are among us and people are making the effort to give to those less fortunate. While cash is accepted by every charity, it may be in your best interest to gift appreciated stocks or mutual funds; this way you get a double tax benefit. you may be able to deduct the value you donated plus wipe out the future capital gain tax. Today I look at how this gifting strategy has affected people living in and out of California. Other topics:

Happy retirees don’t spend their days in the doctor’s office. Staying healthy and active before you retire is your best defense from a miserable retirement.
In my business you usually see two different types of retirees. Your first group is those that are busy, active, focus on their health and genuinely enjoy retirement. The other group misses working and attends doctor’s appointments. Today’s podcast starts off with a discussion on cellular health and staying healthy. Other topics:

Biased articles and scare tactics are the easiest way for media to get your attention. Letting these stories affect your financial decisions is the easiest way to make an investing mistake.
As Q3 comes to an end it’s mindboggling to think of all the crazy headlines we have heard in these few short months. Last year was the first year the market had been negative after quite some time. It’s time to get back in the habit of harvesting losses and managing your taxable accounts.
Managing your taxes is extremely important once you go beyond your 401k. Every year you need to be in the habit of actively harvesting losses if you have them. As long as you don’t buy back what you sold within 30 days, you can take that loss on your tax return. You also need to be aware of issues of inherited gains in mutual funds and ETF’s in your taxable account. Other topics include:

Over the last few weeks you have heard me say that growth investing has had a historical run since the bottom of the market in 2009; handily outperforming value investing. This is your cue to do a portfolio review to try and figure out if you are investing areas that have run too far. Good value investors are very patient and realize that long term pay offs matter more than short term market movements. Other topics include:

The valuation gap between expensive and cheap stocks is the lowest it has been in 9 years. Why is value being ignored while growth gets expensive?
Looking for stocks that are trading at a discount is called value investing. Traditionally this is done by looking at the P/E ratio and right now the valuation gap between expensive and cheap stocks is the lowest it has been in 9 years. Now that investors are turning their attention to quality stocks, value investing is something you should be keeping your eye on as periods of underperformance are followed by periods of outperformance. News headlines are stoking fear by saying that an inverted yield curve have predicts a recession within two years. Two years is an absurdly long time in the financial world and the factors that caused previous inverted yield curves are not causing the yield curve inversions we are seeing today. Think back to last year, did yesterday’s headlines sound familiar? Don’t cave in to doom and gloom media. Timing the market is a fool’s game.
Astute investors realized that yesterday’s headlines were incredibly similar to those during last year’s September-December correction. Daunting headlines and investor Alzheimer’s make for a poor combination that can cause some people to panic out of the market which will typically result in a huge setback in your retirement. Daily headlines really don’t matter in the long run, what does matter is having a strategy that you stick to because you can not time the market! Other topics include:

August can often be a rocky month for the stock market, but could this be a sign that a recession is approaching?
Many people classified yesterday as a “tough day for the markets”, but if you follow market trends it looks a lot like your typical August. The Feds cut interest rates for the first time in more than a decade with the 10 year treasury sinking to pre-Trump numbers. The end result: the most extreme inverted yield curve since 2008. Medical costs are the least fun part of retirement planning. A healthy lifestyle not only keeps expenses low, but it also gives you more time for the things you love!
Regular exercise and a proper diet are a key part of any retirement plan. Saving up a huge pile of money is no good if you end up spending most of it on doctor visits and prescriptions instead of vacations and grandkids. Do what you want in retirement simply because you can by focusing on your health before its too late! If you can do this the rest of your planning all falls under our 10 Pillars of Retirement Income Planning downloadable.

Right now the Feds are in a no-win situation. Leaving rates where they are is risky and Powell would be to blame for any signs of a recession. Alternatively, if they follow the data and were considering lowering rates anyway it will look as if the Feds have caved to Trump’s pressure. What should we do in an economy where we don’t want a strong dollar right now? Other topics include:

The S&P 500 is plowing ahead, but earnings growth is not double digit for the S&P 500. What’s going on in the S&P and what numbers really tell us the truth about the American economy?
By the end of the second quarter the S&P 500 found itself up 18.5%, which includes the sizeable recovery from last year and a push ahead. Much of the volatility has been from trade wars and fed interest rates so we have to we have to bring things back to reality and figure out what is going on within the S&P. With that said, remember that the S&P is cap weighted and is not an exact measure of the largest 500 companies in America. The economy is much more than that. Other topics include:

Money and health are your biggest priorities in retirement. Don’t neglect one and ruin your later years.
Health and financial well being often come together to determine how much you will enjoy retirement. Too often people enter retirement in poor health end up spending more time with doctors than doing what they want to do. Likewise, those who take care of their health usually end up living longer and will need more money to live. Money and health both need to be a priority in retirement. Topics include:

Dividend achiever stocks pay a dividend even when the stock price is down and will even increase their dividend during negative economic cycles and stock market pullbacks. Still think timing the market is a brilliant plan?
You’ve heard me say it several times before, timing the market really is a terrible strategy no matter what age you are. Interest rates are not going up as quickly as we all thought they would. How will low inflation rates affect your portfolio projections?
When I got into the business 25 years ago the 10 year treasury was near 6% and retirees typically held a 50/50 stock to bond allocation. Although most of America is enjoying low inflation on most items, low rates on bonds and CDs along with high healthcare costs are hurting retirees. Be careful with your projections! The dark side of retirement is not one that many people like to discuss even as it becomes a growing problem. Plan out what you want to do and how you’ll fund it to make your golden years actually golden.
Way back in 2017 I shared and article which stated that out of 35 million retirees, 7 million suffer from some sort of depression. Since then 10,000 baby boomers have turned 65 every day and without any real savings or mental preparation it’s easy to see why alcohol and prescription medicine dependency is on the rise amongst seniors. Having a retirement plan can help ensure a better future. Are you ready? Other topics include:

Tax day is coming up quick. Make sure to have your extension filed if you need one and figure out if you can still contribute to your retirement account for 2018.
Taxes are due in a few short weeks and while many of you have already started this process, some of you will be filing an extension. Do note this is not an extension to pay what you owe, nor is it an extension to fund IRA’s or Roth IRA’s. These must be done by April 15th no matter what! So what do you do if you still want to fund a Roth for 2018? Are you still eligible to fund one? Other topics include:

Investors love to predict the next big move for the stock market, but nobody really knows what will happen next. How should you be looking at these predictions?
First quarter GDP numbers will be coming out soon and they are predicted to be in the 1% range. Permabull Jeremy Siegel believes the market will be challenged for further gains due to low earnings growth this year. However, the 10 year treasury is sitting just below 2.7% and low rates boost markets. Today I discuss the latest stock market predictions, what causes these scenarios and how to survive them should they come true. Other topics include:

The market has been charging forward for a while now, but not everyone is benefitting. I share a story that explains why we need to teach our children about adulting.
I recently met a woman who cashed out her retirement plan since it has done nothing over the last 5 years. Upon further questioning I realized that her “financial planner” was in fact an insurance salesman who conned her. The industry needs to push so that anyone pushing commission based products are called salesman and not financial planners. Other topics include:

We’ve had 5 straight quarters of double digit earnings growth, but ECB projections are stealing headlines. How will ongoing Brexit issues affect the market?
Q4 may have shown us a 5th straight quarter with a double digit rise in earnings, but way more on the market is European Central Bank abruptly reducing its 2019 GDP forecast. Brexit is still causing a lot of uncertainty and a No Deal vote is expected to happen by tomorrow leading to who knows what outcome. Also on the radar is some unusual jobs data in an otherwise robust economy. Is inflation even being measured correctly? Other topics include:

While most of the country is going to notice a reduction in taxes, California residents will be all over the board. Itemizing your deductions might not be better than the standard deduction under this new tax plan and your combined state income taxes and property taxes are no longer fully deductible. Running out of money is the top fear for people going into retirement. How do you make sure you don’t outlive your portfolio?
The top fear people have in a low rate environment is running out of money. Historically bonds have yielded over 4-5%. Current bond yields are much lower which is affecting the way we plan for retirement. Major advancements in medicine/longevity are happening every day. Can your portfolio survive as long as you do? Over 90% of Q4 reports have come in and 2018 reported a 20.8% earnings growth over 2017. Pretty good numbers considering the S&P 500 was down 4.5% for the year. Do companies owe this substantial growth in earnings to tax cuts or was it just pure, organic growth. Other topics include:

Timing the market has never worked, but many people still panicked out after December’s sharp correction. Never let emotions get between you and your portfolio.
It happened. A lot of people panicked out at December’s end when the market correction bottomed out. Whether its stocks or real estate the market is impossible to time and most people never profit when they try. Today’s message: Do not let emotions get in the way when investing. Roth 401k or regular 401k? This common question is one many people have when planning their retirement.
In most podcast I tend to focus on what you should be doing in retirement or approaching retirement, but getting to that point is completely different. Employers typically offer Roth 401k’s in addition to the regular 401k and leaving employees to wonder which savings vehicle will be most beneficial to them in the long run. Today I weigh the differences between the regular 401k and the Roth 401k. Other topics include:

The market has already bounced back from its miserable December showing, but that doesn’t mean the market can’t get worse. It’s time to review what a normal recession looks like and what to do during one.
Every 5-7 years we typically see a 20% correction, but it had been much longer that that since our last significant correction. The miserable December left many of us feeling horrible even though the S&P 500 ended the year down by only 4.4%. Since then, anybody who sold around Christmas is now kicking themselves as the fast moving market has already bounced back. What should you do if these recessionary trends continue? Between the government shutdown, Brexit and PG&E’s bankruptcy, the news is full of unsettling stories. Markets can rally even when the media is at its worst!
The news can be unsettling these days. UK citizens are regretting their decision to leave the EU in Brexit. Meanwhile, Trump has ordered many federal employees back to work during the shutdown without pay. We also have PG&E filing for bankruptcy. Despite all these horror stories we have had a huge rally since Christmas Eve. Never panic out when the news is the worst and volatility is high! Other topics include:

The first tax checks should be in the mail today. Here’s what you’ll need to know if you want to avoid penalties from the IRS.
It’s January 15th and its time to make a tax payment. Even if you are going to file for an extension, avoid excess penalties from the IRS and send in a check if you have not withheld enough money or paid enough in quarterly tax payments. Today I discuss how much you need to turn in and things to think about if you are over age 70 ½ this year. Other topics include:

The new tax code is a year old now and people will see the results of it in their tax returns the next few months. High income non-business owners living in states with high income and property taxes may not find themselves too happy with what they see, but for the rest of America it is definitely a tax cut. Today I explain the difference between an economic recession, a revenue recession and an earnings recession. Other topics include:

The worst December ever? Last month's correction may have felt painful, but is really not that big a deal.
The Q3 FOMO rally was quickly followed by a December that left the S&P down by 4.5% on the year. Although the media made the sudden correction feel incredibly painful, remember that this pullback follows a 10 year average return of over 13%! Do not get caught up in the medias racket and make emotional mistakes with your portfolio. Other topics include:
