The Performance Of Different Asset Classes & The Appropriate Use Of Life Insurance In Financial Planning
In this episode of the podcast, certified financial planner Chad Burton provides insights and analysis on various financial topics. The episode begins with a discussion on the current state of the market, focusing on the S&P 500 and NASDAQ indexes. Burton explains the composition of these indexes and highlights the dominance of tech stocks in their performance. He also emphasizes the importance of diversification in building portfolios and cautions against solely relying on large-cap growth stocks. Burton then delves into the performance of different asset classes, including emerging markets, international developed markets, small-cap and mid-cap stocks, and real estate. He compares their returns for the year and provides context by examining their performance since January 2022. He notes that while large-cap growth stocks have seen significant gains this year, other asset classes are still down from their January 2022 levels, presenting potential opportunities for investors. The discussion shifts to fixed income investments, particularly bonds. Burton highlights the attractive yields currently available in the bond market and suggests considering options such as corporate bond ladders and treasury ladders. He explains how these strategies can provide consistent cash flow and potential capital appreciation if interest rates decline in the future. In the latter part of the episode, Burton addresses the topic of life insurance. He clarifies his stance on life insurance, stating that he supports its use when appropriate, such as for protecting families, funding buy-sell agreements, and addressing estate planning needs. However, he cautions against using life insurance as a blanket investment and emphasizes the importance of prioritizing other retirement savings options, such as maxing out 401(k) contributions and Roth IRAs, before considering cash value life insurance policies. Burton concludes the episode by providing a formula for determining life insurance coverage based on income, number of children, and outstanding debts. He also discusses specific scenarios where life insurance can be beneficial, such as second marriages, key person insurance for businesses, and estate tax planning. In this episode, Chad & Rob dive into the seven tests for retirement readiness, providing valuable insights and advice to help you make sense of your money matters. With over 28 years of experience in finance and investing, Chad draws from his expertise to guide you through the intricacies of retirement planning. But before delving into the tests, Chad emphasizes the importance of seeking unbiased advice from a certified financial planner practitioner, rather than relying on financial advisors who may be more focused on selling products than providing comprehensive planning. He also highlights the need to have a clear understanding of your expenses, including non-discretionary and discretionary costs, as well as healthcare expenses and potential future expenses such as grandkids' gifts, home maintenance, and vacations. Chad stresses the significance of considering your tax situation and the potential impact of market corrections on your portfolio. He also touches on the importance of long-term care planning and the various options available, such as long-term care insurance, hybrid life insurance policies, and Medicaid planning. Throughout the episode, Chad emphasizes the need for a well-rounded financial plan that takes into account risk tolerance, tax planning, safe money allocation, and the potential impact of market fluctuations. The fear of missing out on returns can be devastating to retirees, but economic cycles have been part of history for as long as we can remember. Be smart and stick to your retirement plan!
The stock market has been riding high for what feels like an impossibly long time. As a financial planner a common situation I deal with frequently is keeping your retirement plan on track when the market begs you to go all in or all out. Keeping a diversified portfolio just does better in the long run. Don’t let FOMO ruin your retirement! Other topics include:

Social Security can be taken as early as age 62 and many people choose to do so either out of necessity or because they choose to do so fearing the money won’t be there later. Taking early Social Security while working not only reduces your benefits, but it is counted as taxable income. Unless you need it to make ends meet, delay Social Security until your full retirement age or later! Other topics include:

The market has been charging forward for a while now, but not everyone is benefitting. I share a story that explains why we need to teach our children about adulting.
I recently met a woman who cashed out her retirement plan since it has done nothing over the last 5 years. Upon further questioning I realized that her “financial planner” was in fact an insurance salesman who conned her. The industry needs to push so that anyone pushing commission based products are called salesman and not financial planners. Other topics include:

People are moving away from the Bay Area and taxes are where future former residents are pointing their fingers. Facebook loses Instagram and Alphabet joins the communications sector. Why do these two moves have XLK holders less than happy?
Last year big changes were made when real estate was pulled out of the financial sector. Now Google and Alphabet are moving to the new communications sector, joining the likes of AT&T and Verizon. It has also been announced that the Instagram cofounders are leaving Facebook. This is not great news for anyone who owns XLK, the ETF that will no longer hold Facebook or Alphabet. September is already almost over and in just a few weeks another earnings season will come to an end. I kick today’s show off by responding to a couple of listeners emails.
